Q6. How much do I need to spend in Finland per month?

Ans:

1. Tuition Fees in $US

Normally there is no tuition fee in Finland

2. Living & Other Expense in $US

Students have to pay for food, housing, clothes, social life & accidental cost approx. $450 per month (350 euro).

Average expense for 1 month in Finland is around 350 euro....
It all depends on your personal expenses. It can be in between 300 to 500 euro per month on average.

Now in Detail:-

1- House Rent 200 euro (can vary from 160 to 300 euro)

2-Food 100 euro

3-Mobile 30 euros...average... (Including calls to Pakistan)

4-Travelling 20 euro (See the note below)

5-Utility bills NO (included in house rent)

3. About traveling:

In Helsinki, one needs to buy travel card. One month charges for unlimited travel are 20 euro (Only for one region of Helsinki or Espoo) or 43 euro(For all the three regions of Espoo, Helsinki and Vanta). HUT is in Espoo region. Therefore, if u wanna go to city center or for Jummah prayer, then you need a ticket for Helsinki region. And one must pay more than traveling only in Espoo.

Another option is to buy ticket only when you travel. Buying a ticket for only-one-time-use is about 1 euro (for one region) and 2.2 euro (for inter-region). Please, note that these prices are calculated after half rate for students. For non-students, prices are double (40 euro for one region and 83 euro for three regions). Check this site for details (www.ytv.fi).

For other cities (Tamere, Turku, Vassa and others), FARE ki zarorat nai kunke yahan shaher bht chote hein...her chez walking distance pe hei...but if u want to make a bus card ...it wud cost u around 28 euros(Turku) after 50% student discount n u can travel any where in city any number of time for 1 month.....

4. Health Service
Student have to arrange their own health insurance before applying for visa .It is an essential requirement. It usually cost around 200e for 1 year health insurance.

Q7. What about Accommodation?

Ans:

1. There are different kinds of student housings.
1. Students are usually accommodated in a flat with a private room and a kitchen and toilet facilities shared with 2 to 3 other students. This is most common form of housing.
2. Or there can be a ten persons living in a corridor. Each person has a separate room, with its own bathroom and refrigerator. Kitchen, dinning area and balcony are shared among all the students.
3. Some housing authorities also offer friend apartments. Two persons live in a flat with a kitchen, a wash room and two living rooms.
4. Family apartments are for students with families. It is similar to 'friend's apartment'
2. The rent per month for student housing ranges from 160 to 300 euro for a room in a shared flat. One can consider 200 euro as an average rent.
3. Another option is to use private accommodation. Two or three persons can share a flat. This can be expensive. An average flat ranges from 500 to 800 euros, depending upon its location. Private accommodation

Information given above is general. Detailed Information is below. It is actually an email written by one of the most active members of PSA Finland, Adeel Danish. It is a long mail… but it will be v v v fruitful for u ppl.Plz Do Readt It

first of all let me tell u about student accommodation system in finland.

There is always a "student village" in every city.
There are various types of apartment in student village.
You can apply into the student village for an apartment via an e-application.
u can fill it online, choose ur apartment type(according to space or rent)..
submit the application online...and u will get student village authorities response after 1 n a half month....(websites for applying to the student village are mentioned in the end of mail)-
do not worry about that whether u wud get an apartment or not...
they have a huge student village with few students...so there are always so many rooms available.
After u get response from student village that they have given u a apartment.you can pay deposit and rent of first month(deposit usually 250 euro and rent is around 200 euro).
u may pay this amount before coming to finland,i mean from pakistan u can transfer this money into student village account...OR u can simply arrive in finland..and pay it afterwards...

Now...question is wat sort of apartments are available n with wat facilities...?

There are usually 4 types of apartment.
1-single room (small)
2-single room (Large)
3-Shared apartment
4-Studio type apartment..

now let me explain them one by one:-

1-Single room (small)

Area=15 Sq. Meter (haqeqat me chota kamra)
isme apka bed, fridge, table, chair aram se aa sakti hei...lekin is se ziada kuch nai
Rent=from 160 to 200 euro
Attached washrum.
But kitchen is shared among 10 students may be..like there are 10 rooms in a corridor and one kitchen in the end for all students on that corridor..

2-Single room (Large)

Area=22 Sq. Meter (kafi bara kamra)
isme 2 students bht asani se reh sakte hein..
mera room itna hi hei...
aur isme 2 beds, fridge,TV,microwave ,two tables,Chair sb para hoa hei aur iske bad bhi darmian mein kafi jaga hei..so its a v nice choice for those students who want to live with a room-mate.
But keep one thing in ur mind...dats v important..
A single room is always given to ONE student...but it is u who share it with ur friend .
like again my example,
yei room mere dost mehmood k naam pe hei...
usne iska deposit jama kiya tha..
but when i arrive.we start sharing its rent..
now i pay 110 euro and mehmood pay 110 (220 total rent).
Attached Washrum.
But again kitchen is shared with 10 or 15 ppl.(dun worry finnish do not use kitchen...usually u will find only DESI inside it making something spicy n hot).

3-Shared Apartment.

Its a kind of flat with 3 rooms, a kitchen and a washrum with a small area for dining.
me is qism k flat mein rehta tha when i arrived in finland.(u can see its pic in our photo section)..
A shared apartment can accommodate 3 students..1 per room.
Area of each room is usually 18 Sq. Meters.
Rent is around 160 to 180 euros.
but problem is this ...u CANNOT choose ur flat mates....
i was living with two finnish guyz ......
When u apply for a shared apartment..u never know who is going to be ur flat mate.....can be swedish, finnish, russian, estonian koi bhi.
Han gender specific hote hein.
so kisi ko khush hone ki zaroorat nai hei..
aas pas larke hi hunge...
Khtra aapko hi hoga kisi aur ko nai ...

4-Studio :-

Each studio has one big room with a small kitchenette and bathroom (=shower+toilet). The size of the studios is 32,5 square meters.
2 ppl can v easily survive in it...but again it will be given to one student...
Rent is around 300 euro...

Now Facilities:-

1-Internet connection in every apartment..
Just pay yearly fees around 70 euro and access 2 MB CIR link(not from multinet ).....

2-Laundry machines is available in every building .It is a shared system.Pay 1.5 euro for one time washing,drying.....

3-Sauna...(yei aa k hi samjh mein aayega k kia hota hei....tum logo ko abhi yaqeen hi nai ayega...American Pie Naked Mile dekhi hei kisi ne ..samjh jao aage...) ..

4-Sports area.

5-Allergy-causings pets, such as cats and dogs are not allowed in the apartments, neither smoking inside the buildings. So smoking not allowed inside rooms.

6-Rooms are excellent..(u wud not feel any garmi sardi inside it....bahr -25 hota tha aur room k andar mein aik pajame mein ghoom raha hota tha wo bhi without shirt....)room tempreture is always maintained to 25C.....

7-One more thing..rooms can be furnished and non furnished..

Furnished:-

furnished means u will get a bed without mattress, table chair, cupboard, fridge.but u will pay 5 euro each month for this facility..

Non-Furnished:-

Non furnished means No such thing...u wud have an empty room...with ofcourse no extra money.

Now apply as soon as possible kunke ache flats ya rooms shru mein hi nikal jate hein...
to aap sb apply ker do...apply kerne k koi paise nai hein..bad me beshuk 1 room ko 2 bnde share ker lena ya jo behter samjho...

ziada tar information Turku ki hei...but helsinki aur dosre shehro me bhi taqreeban yehi scene hei....

Now LINKS for Housing Authorities:-

Q-8 What about Working in Finland?

Ans :

Let this be very clear that if the purpose of the whole exercise is to make money in a foreign land than Finland would be your last choice. I have yet to come across a tree in Finland where I could gather Euros from. No doubt some individuals who have worked very hard (and when I say ‘very’ I want to stress fully on the word that it is indeed very hard to make money) to make money and study together. But those individuals have never bothered about the nature of job or how much was the pay from that work etc. You need to go round searching for working and knocking from door to door asking people if they need someone to help them with something.

This is of course the crudest form of way of looking for work. Another more organized manner could be that you make a resume (preferably in Finnish) and drop it in hotels, shops etc and hope that they call you or hire you. Like someone who has made some money here would say to me “Its about how you market yourself”.

1. University students are allowed to work for up to 25 hours per week without a work permit.

2. If you do not know Finnish, Norwegian, Russian or Swedish it can be very difficult to find an ODD job.

Part Time Job:-

ODD jobs are hard to find..but some ppl still do it ( cleaning [ 800 euro per month ] , paper delivery [ 400 euro per month max ] , restaurants [ 600 euro per month ] )...but usually students coming into masters program get their funded thesis quite early from which they can easily manage 800 to 1000 euro per month...or some of them get IT job from which they are earning around 1200 euro..Also some of them like me are doing internships(paid) .....

Regular IT Job:-

There are lot of jobs for programmers like ( C, C++, Java, Symbian, S60 Mobile application development, Linux system programming)....but it does not mean that u get job in ur 1st week....u have to w8 for a good opportunity.....For Telecommunication Networks Jobs....i was taking to waqas Khattak bhai(Engr in Ericsson from Helsinki) n according to him, there are not so many jobs in this field.......u may get if u r lucky or get thesis in Nokia or ericsson but its not so frequent...

Q-16 Shud I Carry LAPTOP in Finland/Sweden???

Ans:

Well most of u thinking about carrying laptop from pakistan...
let me give u my views on this issue...

There are three question which u shud ask to urself first:-

1 - Do i really need a Computer?
2 - What is my need (NOT desire)..Laptop or Desktop..??
3 - From where i shud purchase it..Pakistan or Finland/Sweden..??

Q(1) - Do i really need a Computer?

Let me tell u about facilities...There is 24/7 Computer Lab,not for engineering or scientific purpose but for those who does not have any PC and wants to Chat/Voice Chat or use internet for surfing....This sort of lab is present in almost every university in Finland & i think it shud be in sweden too.
There are Computers in Libraries,Class rooms,Research/Engineering Labs...almost everywhere in university.....
Let me also tell you there are some fellows who passes most of their time in university and thus do not require any PC at home...

2 - What is my need (NOT desire)..Laptop or Desktop..??

Ok this is also an interesting question..If u r an IT Person and really need portability...so that it can affect ur studies and performance in Education.....then go for Laptops...Otherwise if u need it for chatting, surfing, watching movies, listening music....Use DeskTop...I myself have this experience ....i purchased a laptop last year...but i mostly use it like a server..and this is very important point my dear fellows..infact i also did a job in a software house but they give me a new branded PC and i didn't need my laptop over there nor in university....using like a server means here we download movies through torrents and my laptop remain ON for DAYS...yes for days...and its usual practice among all desi.....SO if u use it like this...do not go for Laptops...buy a desktop..it will be much better configuration in same amount..i mean lot of RAM,processor speed & HD...reliable...etc...i hope u all understand my point...

3 - From where i shud purchase it..Pakistan or Finland/Sweden..??

I think u shud buy it from here....first of all it will 1 No. ....phr guarantee ka masla nai hoga...agar koi masla aaya yaheen se theek ho jaiga...

Now prices & Configuration....

New Laptop :-

starts from 400 euro and upto 800 euros.(ofcourse it may b higher depending upon ur need of configuration)..u may check latest prices from below link..

http://www.gigantti.fi/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/store-gigantti-Site/fi_FI/-/EUR/SearchCatalog-ViewCategory;pgid=D6ez6oZKCVlSR0EjF5FBwx1q0000o_RcTk_K?CatalogCategoryID=eWjD4QFH5rsAAAEO0lg03xil

just an overview..in 400 u may get 80 GB HD,around 2 MHz processor 512 RAM CD/DVD writer etc.....(but 400 is minimum it can vary according to model & Company)....

New DeskTop:-

Starts from 300 Euro and upto 800 Euros. Its really cheap as compare to laptops with same configuration...IF a laptop with same configuration wud cost u 600 euros than Desktop 300/400 euros...so clear difference...u may check DeskTop on following link.

http://www.gigantti.fi/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/store-gigantti-Site/fi_FI/-/EUR/SearchCatalog-ViewCategory;pgid=D6ez6oZKCVlSR0EjF5FBwx1q0000o_RcTk_K?CatalogCategoryID=WdjD4QFHpM0AAAEOW1g03xil

Second Hand PCs:-

Second hand or Refurbished computers are also available...There are various websites and also some shops do this business. They are quite cheap...1 week ago i saw a 2nd hand PC in 100 euros with gud configuration...

Q-17 What about Air Travel from Karachi to Helsinki(Finland) Flights , Tickets & Luggage Limit??

Ans:

possible routes are as follows

1-Turkish Airline (Shortest) karachi-istanbol-Helsinki (55K PKR)
2-PIA+Lufthansa Karachi-Dubai-Frankfurt-Helsinki (50K PKR)
3-PIA+KLM Karachi-Dubai-Amsterdam-Helsinki (50K PKR)

Let me also tell u there is luggage limit of 20 Kg in ur suitcase & 10 Kg in Hand carry.

PIA has only one advantage... i.e; of luggage .....u may take more than 20 KG with u....

otherwise if u have some persons in Airport who can pass ur extra luggage OR if u dun have stuff more then 20 Kg than u may also opt for TURKISH airline..

I myself took turkish airline....
shortest path...min. stay.....infact only one stay at istanbol....
but it is just a bit expensive... .2K or 3K more....

Q-20 What type of BOOKS shud i carry in Finland?

Ans:

jigar,

there is no such issue of books.all books are available in university library.
u may issue them for 4 or 5 months easily( in 3 weeks renewal time).
Mostly teachers follow particular text books and those books are always available in Library.

But if u want to bring books then bring those which u have used in Bachelors and u used them for ur concepts building...
like

william stalling(wireless comm)
Lathi (Communication sys)
Frenzel ( Communication electronics )
or any other related...

One more thing...Best way is to bring E-BOOKS.
n dun forget to bring a USB(as large capacity as possible) or USB Hard Drive

write those ebooks on CDs.
or Copy them in ur USB...
like
proakis(DSP)
